The legendary Lin Dan (China) ends the first day of DANISA DENMARK OPEN 2018 presented by VICTOR with a win against Kantaphon Wangcharoen (Thailand). It was a day with several upsets, as well as several favorites asserting their dominance.
The men’s singles category was stacked full of talents on the first day of play with Chinese superstar Lin Dan in the final match of the day against Thai underdog Kantaphon Wangcharoen. Lin Dan won the match with a score of 21-13/14-21/21-7.
Earlier that same day, Lin Dan’s countryman and 2016 Olympic gold medalist, Chen Long, suffered a 20-22/15-21 loss to Hong Kong’s NG Ka Long Angus.

All in all it was a rough day for the Chinese men’s singles, Shi Yiqu (World Nr. 2) losing to Sameer Verma (World Nr. 23) from India as well. The biggest showdown of the day between the two potentially best men’s singles - a clash of the titans - Kento Momota (Japan) and Anthony Ginting (Indonesia), ended in favor of the Japanese with the score 21-18/21-23/21-15.
In the women’s singles department, Carolina Marín played Mia Blichfeldt to round up the category for the night, the Danish hope for the future taking down the Spanish Olympic gold medalist and 2018 world champion in three sets for a final score of 21-19/14-21/21-19.
- I thought to myself, this time I’ll get it! But I’ll have to admit that my hand was shaking a bit as well, said Mia Blichfeldt after one of the biggest wins of her career.
Earlier on tuesday morning, 2016 Olympic silver medalist and world Nr. 3, Pusarla V. Sindhu, was knocked out by underdog and world Nr. 10, Beiwen Zhang (USA).
Olympic gold medalist Chen Qingchen and partner, Jia Yifan, took down their Korean opponents, Chang Ye Na/Jung Kyung Eun, after a narrow first-game win before finishing them off in the third game, resulting in the final score of 22-20/16-21/21-16.
The Chinese men’s doubles constellation, Li Junhui/Liu Yuchen, scored an not only expected, but also dominating win against the Indonesian duo, Ade Yusuf Santo/Wahyu Nayaka Arya Pangkarynira, with a final score of 21-11/21-17.
