You certainly know the Laudrup brothers from football and the Williams sisters from tennis. At the Li-Ning BWF World Badminton Championships you also find several pairs with family relations.
A married couple and siblings from different countries like Ireland, New Zealand and Malaysia are among the competitors in Ballerup Super Arena this week.
The Irish pair - little brother Sam Magee and his two year’s elder sister Chloe Magee - was beaten in the mixed double category. Their opponents from Taiwan triumphed 24-22 and 21-17.
Oliver and Susannah Leydon-Davis, brother and sister as well, have travelled all the way from New Zealand, but they also didn’t have any family luck. They lost against the Russians, Vitalij Durkin and Nina Vislova.
Later on Monday evening another pair of siblings will make their entrance to the tournament. The Bulgarian sisters, Gabriela and Stefani Stoeva, will face a constellation from Taiwan. We might look forward to a close match, because the Bulgarians are ranked 17 in the world, one step better than the pair from Taiwan.
The family-related activities Tuesday
The team from Indonesia also has a pair of siblings. Markis Kido and Pia Zebadiah Bernadeth are sisters and brothers, despite of their different surnames. They are seeded for a quarter final. Markis Kido is first of all a well-known player with an Olympic title in Men’s Doubles among one of his greatest victories.
Hui Ern Ng and Hui Lin Ng represent Malaysia in Women’s Double. The sisters will face a pair from Nigeria, which is a country you not quite often associate with badminton.
The married couple from England
A married couple will also compete in the tournament. Chris and Gabrielle Adcock from England are fourth seed and may have the best chance – between all the family constellations - of winning a medal in the prestigious tournament.
