A bunch of the top favourites in Men’s Singles, among them local hero Jan Ø. Jørgensen and Malaysian star Lee Chong Wei, gave proof of their strength at Day 1 at Li Ning BWF World Championships.
It is no secret, that Lee Chong Wei from Malaysia catches sight of his first World Championships title in the light of sworn enemy Lin Dan’s absence in this year’s tournament.
But it is also no secret, that Danish home favourite Jan Ø. Jørgensen is ready to do his best to whip the prestigious title from all his opponents. Monday, both of them played their first match in Ballerup Super Arena.
Rumbling stomach
Jan Ø. Jørgensen secured his first win against Maxime Moreels from Belgium, 21-15, 21-11, in a rather easy match for the third seed Dane.
- It was really nice to get started and play in the arena. I never doubted, that I was going to win, but I still felt my stomach rumbling a bit before we started out, the 26th year old Dane told the press after the match.
Chong Wei spiced up
Top seed Malay Lee Chong Wei didn’t have any problems in his first match as well - despite complains of still suffering from the injury that kept him away from the recent played Commonwealth Games in Scotland. Lee Chong Wei entered court number 1 – wearing a spicy pink shirt and shoes – and slowly, but safely, outplayed his opponent Lee Kong Keun from Korea, 21-11, 21-12.
- I still feel my injury, but I forget it, when I play. I try not to think about it and I just do my very best, the Malay said.
Chinese Chen Long, second seed and also one of the biggest favourites to bring home one of the medals, is playing his first game Tuesday.
