One of Denmark’s best chances to win a gold medal, Jan Ø. Jørgensen,  suffered an unlucky exit from the World Championships Thursday night. A knee injury forced the Dane to retire.

Suddenly, a touch of melancholy hit the crowd in Ballerup Super Arena. Jan Ø. Jørgensen suddenly felt something was wrong in his knee and the crowd expected the worst.

- At 2-0, I feel a tear just under my knee cap. I knew right away that something was wrong. Afterwards, I felt it in my calf and foot, Jan Ø. Jørgensen said.

It was difficult for the Dane to describe the disappointment he felt after the withdraw from the 1/8 final against Chou Tien Chen from Taiwan at the score 9-4 in second game.

- It’s the dream of winning and playing the World Championships that suddenly burst. I’ve prepared so well and this was the worst thing that could ever happen, Jan Ø. Jørgensen said.

Retired in second game
The Dane tried to continue the match and got through first game. But it was easy to see that Jan Ø. Jørgensen couldn’t play his best because of his injured knee.

In the break between first and second game, Jan Ø. received treatment but it didn’t help. At the score 9-4 Jan Ø. signaled to the umpire that he couldn't continue.
