Day 4 – Li-Ning BWF Badminton World Championships 2014

Day 4 in Li-Ning BWF World Badminton Championships turned out to be full of surprises. Danish favourite Jan Ø. Jørgensen retired from his match due to a sudden knee injury. Defending World Champion Ratchanok Intanon from Thailand and Chinese Wang Yihan are also out of the tournament.

Women’s Singles:
Ratchanok Intanon from Thailand triumphed at last year’s World Championships, but Thursday the Thai left the courts in Denmark the day before the quarter-finals.  Also Saina Nehwal had to struggle a lot to make her way through to the quarter-finals, while top seed Chinese Li Xuerui had an easy win. Another surprise of the day occurred, when European Champion Carolina Marin from Spane beat Chinese third seed Wang Yihan with a an impressive win, 21-9,21-12.

Men’s Singles:
While Lee Chong Wei and Chen Long once again had an easy win, the home ground favourite Jan Ø. Jørgensen suffered a shocking exit from the tournament in front of the Danish home crowd. A knee injury kept him from completing his match against Chou Tien Chen from Chinese Taipei. Down with 21-9 in first game and 9-4 in second game, he retired.

His compatriot Viktor Axelsen, who made it through to the quarter-finals by winning his match 21-16, 21-17 against Tien Minh Nguyen from Vietnam, is now facing his teammate’s superior. 

One of the tournaments biggest surprises, Dutch Eric Pang, is also ready for the quarter-finals.

Mixed Doubles:
No huge surprises occurred in the mixed doubles category, despite from the loss of the two European pairs 4th seed Mr. and Mrs. Adcock and 6th seed Michael Fuchs/Birgit Michels   Especially Danes Christinna Pedersen and Joachim Fischer are looking eager to do a good job on home ground, while many Chinese top seeded pairs also call for attention.

Men’s Doubles:
4th seed Hiroyuki Endo and Kenichi Hayakawa from Japan was the best seeded pair leaving the Men’s Doubles just before the quarter-finals, and also Malaysian and Indonesian pairs suffered defeat. Danish Carsten Mogensen and Mathias Boe are still going strong.

Women’s Doubles:
All the top seed Women’s Doubles are out of the tournament even before the quarter-finals takes place. Second seeded Danes, Christinna Pedersen and Kristina Rytter Juhl, lost their match against 10th seed Indonesian and also third seed Misaki Matsutomo and Ayaka Takahashi from Japan suffered a defeat.
