A focused effort by ‘the Adcocks’ in today’s quarterfinal against Swedish Nico Ruponen/Amanda Högström resulted in Mrs Adcock’s first ever European medal.

The day of the quarterfinals has come to an end here in Kolding, and we now know who the medallists of this year’s European Championship will be. The days to come will reveal who will take the gold and the titles and who will have to ‘settle’ for silver and bronze.

In Mixed doubles it looks like it will be a tough fight for the gold between the Danish home court favourites Joachim Fischer/Christinna Pedersen and the English stars Chris and Gabrielle Adcock.

The Danes are double defending European Champions and they are, of course, hoping to win title number three this year.

- We’ve come here to win again, but we also know that a lot of other pairs are here to see if they can run faster than us. It will mean so much to us win this title one more time, says Christinna Pedersen.

The British, on the other hand, have never won a European medal together, and Gabriel Adcock has never won one at all.

 - It’s my first European medal, and that feels pretty good, it’s good to be in the medal stages and hopefully we can build from a bronze. We are definitely looking to go a stage further, says Gabrielle Adcock.

Today ‘the Adcocks’ played really well when they defeated Ruponen/Högström from Sweden 21-17, 21-12.

- I think we played really well today. They are a really good pair and we have played some really close matches against them, says Gabrielle Adcock, and Chris continues.

- The conditions here are very nice and so is the arena. It’s always nice to play in front of a crowd, and certainly in Denmark, they love badminton and there are lots of kids watching, which is great.

Before a meet between Joachim Fischer/Christinna Pedersen and ‘the Adcocks’ is a reality, both pairs need to win their semi-finals tomorrow. The Danes will face Irish Sam and Chloe Magee and ‘the Adcocks’ are up against Audrey Fontaine/Ronan Labar from France.

Another international star through to the semis is Spanish Carolina Marin. In her pursuit of her third consecutive European gold medal she defeated Danish Natalia Koch Rohde 21-11, 21-14 in today’s quarterfinal. Tomorrow she will face yet another Dane, as Mette Poulsen is waiting for the Olympic champion.

A lot of the Danish players are after winning today European medallists, among others Hans-Kristian Solberg Vittinghus, Anders Antonsen, Mette Poulsen and David Daugaard who, like Gabrielle Adcock, are winning their first European medals.

In Men’s doubles all four remaining pair are Danish so the crowd might get some difficulties deciding who to cheer for as they clash in tomorrow’s semi-finals.

All in all, 10 Danes are now certain about receiving a medal at this year’s European Championship in Denmark, and we are of course hoping that many of them will be of gold.
