Vladimir Ivanov and Ivan Sozonov has established themselves as one of the best men's doubles in the world. This was clearly proven, when they won the 2016 edition of All England. Another resume highlight for the two is the title of European Champions of 2014, a title they are very keen of reclaiming. But actually it was a mere coincidence, that the two came to play badminton together.

The situation does not look very fierce, but the subsequent scenes does. Ivan Sozonov in agonyd on the floor grabbing his Achilles tendon during the semi-finals at the European Championships last year. He is clearly in pain.  The game continues until the rally is finished, and a doctor is called on court.

Subsequently, he attempts to play on, desperately wanting to defend his European Championship gold medal. But it is soon clear, that he must give up and say his thanks to opponents Anders Skaarup Rasmussen and Kim Astrup Sorensen. Eventually, he leaves the arena in France in a wheelchair. His Achilles tendon is raptured.

- We could not defend the title last year because I got injured, and due to this, we really want to win the European Championships this year. It would mean a lot to both us and our country, Ivan Sozonov remarks.

It was a terrible injury, but the 27-year-old Russian recovered in record time and was, together with his partner, Vladimir Ivanov ready to play in the Olympics in Rio. Thus they are now ready to try to regain their gold Medal at the European Championships in Kolding.
