The European Championships has come to an end here in Kolding. In total, Denmark two European champions!
In Women’s doubles Kamilla Rytter Juhl won her 7th European gold medal as she and partner Christinna Pedersen defeated Gabriela and Stefani Stoeva from Bulgaria 21-11, 15-21, 21-11. The seven gold medals for Rytter Juhl make her the most gold winning Dane at the European championships ever.
In Mixed doubles Christinna Pedersen had the chance to catch up with Rytter Juhl’s seven gold medals as she and Joachim Fischer faced Chris and Gabrielle Adcock from England.
- I’m going to keep a watchful eye on whether or not Kamilla will be cheering for me during the mixed double final or if she just wants to keep the record to herself, laughs Christinna Pedersen after winning the Women’s doubles and Kamilla Rytter Juhl continues.
- I must enjoy it for the next couple of hours because she might just catch up with me very soon.
As the Mixed doubles final turned in to a true drama it became clear at the end that Pedersen wouldn’t be able to seize the opportunity and catch up with Rytter Juhl. After 1 our and 18 minutes of play ‘the Adcocks’ triumphed with a 21-17, 18-21, 21-19 win.
None of ‘the Adcocks’ have won a European gold medal before, and Gabrielle Adcock has never won a European medal before at all.
In Women’s singles Carolina Marin from Spain has been quite superior throughout the week and today’s final was no exception. Kirsty Gilmour from Scotland fought her very best, but the Olympic champion was just too strong. With a 21-14, 21-12 win Marin won her third consecutive European gold medal.
- It was a really good final and I feel really happy to win my third gold medel at the Europeans. Kirsty is a very good opponent, she’s very tough and she’s a good a fighter. It was a really good crowd and I felt a lot of support from them which I really appreciate, says Marin.

The Men’s doubles final was an all Danish clash between defending champions Mads Kolding/Mads Conrad and Mathias Boe/Carsten Mogensen. Boe/Mogensen have been playing really well lately and today they continued to do so. After 51 minutes and a 21-16, 22-20 win Boe/Mogensen regained their title from 2012 as European Champions.
None of the finalists in the Men’s singles final had won a gold medal at the Europeans before. In fact, Anders Antonsen had never won a European medal before since this was his first appearance at a European championship.
It didn’t turn into a complete fairytale for the young Dane as he lost the final against Rajiv Ouseph from England in two very close sets 21-19, 21-19. After the defeat Antonsen was disappointed about losing, but also happy about the way things have turned out for him during the week.
- Right now it’s difficult for me to see the silver as a victory, but it means a lot to me. This European championship has been quite a journey for me and I have played some very good badminton and won some great victories against Viktor Axelsen and Marc Zwiebler, says Antonsen.
